Ten Motivational Tips for a Successful Home Based Business

Brian Therrien, President Moneykey Networks © October, 2001

The reality is that no-one can motivate anyone else to do anything they don't want to do. All a "motivator" can do for another is provide them with incentives to motivate themselves.

Here are ten very effective strategies to help you get up and get moving toward actualizing the enormous, untapped potential of your home based business.

1. Be willing to leave your comfort zone. The greatest barrier to achieving your potential is your comfort zone. Great things happen when you make friends with your discomfort zone. So strike up that conversation with with the person standing next to you in line and see where it leads.

Recently, Vian, DashTools President and Founder, went to meet a distributor at a local restaurant. But Vian had the meeting day wrong and the distributor didn't show up. Before he realized his error, he started talking to another patron, and they got talking about the DashTools opportunity. Now that stranger is an investor in the company.

2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Wisdom helps us avoid making mistakes and comes from making a million of them.

3. Don't indulge in self-limiting thinking. Think empowering, expansive thoughts. You have to turn statements like "I hope I can succeed" into "I'm going to succeed!" You have to figure out what you're really promoting...and why. In fact, the "why" part may be the most important ingredient.

I decided to get involved with MoneyKey not because the I-Tool is a neat little piece of technology, but because I can see it is a technology that can change the way millions of people relate to the Internet in a positive way. I want to be part of something IMPORTANT and when I talk to others about the I-Tool or the other Tools, I am full of FIRE.

4. Choose to be happy. Happy people are easily motivated. Happiness is your birthright so don't settle for anything else. Watch as people follow you to join your excitement.

If you don't think your attitude and disposition are choices you make, think again. I'm not talking about avoiding or not feeling the kind of unhappiness that follows on a bad situation. I'm talking about your general orientation to the world and to others. If you've got a negative disposition, that's what people see on your face and hear in your voice. When you're selling something, your negativity will attach itself to your product or service - and that's a FACT!

5. Spend at least one hour a day in self-development. Read good books or listen to inspiring tapes or videos.

There are two parts to this: first, discipline. Second, learning. Be disciplined about learning because learning changes who you are and how you do things. It's as simple as that!

6. Train yourself to finish what you start. Finish one task before you begin another. Do not over commit your time and learn to say no.

We're all busy people with lots of things to do. But, if we have too many things to do, we're in danger of doing some at the expense of others, or of giving short shrift to all. Prioritize around what's important, not urgent. Do the things that are going to enable you to achieve your goals. You want every step you take to be a step in the right direction.

7. Live fully in the present moment. When you live in the past or the future you lose focus on what has to be done now.

I am not suggesting you don't reflect or remember, or that you don't dream and plan. But when you are doing something or engaging with someone, be there! Give it or them your full and undivided attention. If doing the thing you are doing or relating to another person is important then pay them the respect they deserve. If they are not important ask yourself why you're there at all - or if you have no choice, how much time you're going to spend.

8. Commit yourself to joy. C.S. Lewis once said, " Joy is the serious business of heaven."

Man, there's a word! It's the kind of concept, like happiness, that can seem so pedestrian at times. But, JOY, when you really think on it, elevates your thinking to a whole new realm. It launches you out of the ordinary into the EXTRAORDINARY. It is to be able to experience incredible, fantastic, marvellous creation itself - and to know you are in it and of it. It puts you inside the circle of life where you can never be alone. Everyone you know, and everyone you meet is there with you.

9. Never quit when you experience a setback or frustration.

Success could be just around the corner. Just because someone may say NO, remember the NO is not to you but to the opportunity. So do not take it personal. Retain your commitment to be happy. Understand that you are doing something important. Learn from your mistakes. Be disciplined and "professional" in your response.

10. Dare to dream BIG DREAMS.

Don't dream beyond your abilities, or your resources. Don't get lost in your dreams. But DREAM BIG. What is the point of having small ones? How can you benefit if you set the bar too low? Overcome your fears. Raise your expectations. Do what is right. Do what is important.

So, there are 10 tips that come out of a lot of experience. Not just mine, but a lot of people who have achieved great things in life. If you put them to use on a daily basis, you will be a success. Guaranteed!

I'll leave you with a quote from Charles Dubois: " We must be prepared, at any moment, to sacrifice who we are for who we are capable of becoming." Amen to that!
